Default Spiders?

Amy, why are there 'spiders' at RSC from yahoo, google & MSN? I clicked on the link right above where it lists who's at RSC at the bottom of the home page and a list simular to the member list came up telling me who was looking at what & there were all these spiders listed. What's a spider anyway?

A "spider" in this case is a program that crawls from page to page around the internet gathering information. This is how Google is able to basically catalog the web. There is code out there that you can use to prevent spider programs from caching copies of your web pages, however.

Thanks Jeff. Spiders can be a good thing because they help to bump you up on searches. If they get to the point that they slow down the site I'll block them. Most forum owners just let them do their "thang".

I should also hasten to add that since these spiders do not have accounts here so any dirty little secrets you post to the Rubber Room should theoretically not get indexed in Google.

The creepy crawlies are EVERYWHERE!!!

Thanks for the info, Jeff & Amy! I feel better knowing we're not being spied upon for nefarious purposes.

For a minute there I thought you were talking about me! I crawl all over the innernet checking out stuff... Glad it was not the spideycindy kind you were asking about and since I know so little about the computer I had to look and check this out...
