Question What's the rest of a mask called?

I'm frantically writing up the directions for a card to submit to VSN before the deadline next week. I used both parts of a mask, the mask itself as well as the outer, remaining part. There's a mutant cell in the back of my brain telling me that part has a special name. Unfortunately, none of my other brain cells remember it! Any help?

Red face

A search on-line led me to Splitcoast Stampers, where I learned that it is, indeed, called a reverse mask. You were right, Darci. I was trying to make it more complicated than necessary.

Mask--the image you cut out to cover the image you've stamped; mortise mask--what's left and can be used to mask what's outside the image you stamped. Here's one site that talks about mortise masking:

Reverse mask is what I've always heard it called too... Never knew there was another name for it.

Yes, it is a Mortise Mask.
I wonder if it is French, and has something to do with "mort"/death????

there is also the use of mortise in joint/wood work. It's a hole or groove made to accept or hold another piece in place

i like thinking about how we got the words we have too Deb Lovett

I alwaya figure any day you learn something new is a good day. If it has to do with stamping, it's a GREAT day!
