Hi everyone. I know there's a lot of different stamp companies out there (on this board).. I didn't see a thread like this so... Let's start a list of who has an angel policy and what it is... This may help our fellow stampers out there. :)

I'll try to keep this updated when I see a new reply..

Queen Kat Designs-

I ordered from Stamp Francisco lately, and was very disappointed to see that, according to them (and they now sell RBBS now), Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers is NOT an Angel company. Very sad, I love their stuff.

What does it exactly mean if a company is NOT an angel company?
does that only relate to my not being able to make a profit off items that I sell that use said materials/stamps? or does it go further than that?

Many images used for rubber stamps are copyrighted and to use those images without permission to make things you sell (either for profit or charity)can violate copyright law and can get you into legal & financial trouble if the company/person owning the copyright decides to pursue the infringement in court. (Remember the big bru-ha-ha about MP3 down loads a few years ago? That was all about copyright infringement.)

That said, many stamp companies do allow stampers to use their images to make for sale items as long as the Angel Policy rules of that company are followed. Most are fine with you making $ using their designs as long as you give credit for the images used to that company. You really need to check with each company (most have their policy on their web site) before you start to make salable items using their stamps because some require a letter stating what you plan to use their images for & you can't use those images unless they send you written permission. Also, some companies limit WHERE you can sell items stamped with their images.

For example: SU! is an Angel Company that has very particular rules about what you have to do for permission & where you can sell. To use SU! images for salable items, you have to stamp one of their copyrighted "stamped by" images that you have bought from them on the item or at least on a tag attached to the item or on the packaging of the item. You can't sell items using SU! images at any permanent retail location including websites or on line auction sites. You can sell at craft fairs, school events and other temporary sales opportunities. As a demo, if I have a booth at an event I have to choose whether I want to sell my hand stamped items OR sell catalogs and collect orders for current product. I'm not allowed to do both at the same time & location.

Even if a stamp company is not an Angel Company, you can still make hand stamped items with those images for gifts or donations to charities as well as for submission to magazines. Just make sure when submitting that you give credit for all of the images you use by listing what image is from what company if you know that info.

I know it sounds complicated & it can be if the copyright owner wants to be in total control of how their images are used. If you check what the policy is before you buy stamps you want to use for salable items, you'll at least know up front if you can use those images how you want.

I use this to do a first check on whether companies are angel or not; I also do a google search. The website, in spite of the date on the site, is pretty up to date; new vendors have appeared on the list since last fall. I have bought or asked for the copyright stamps for various vendors, sent emails to get written permission, etc.

I do feel it's really important to give credit to the artist(s) if they feel strongly enough to ensure it's not too hard for us to get a copyright stamp or permission.

I've been having a hard time figuring out how I am going to copyright my TK from Cornish Heritage Farm candles. I'll probably put something on a tag with instructions on how to use the candle - using a votive once the pillar has burned down enough.

thanks for the lengthy explanation :)
I don't do stuff for sale, so I guess I'm pretty safe with stamping whatever the heck I want. And I usually do not post items online that contain SU stamps so I don't have to fuzz with their fuzzyness ;)
I know that the TK images from Cornish Heritage Farms fall under CHF angel policy which is on their website. This is because they have to pay TK royalty for EACH stamp that they sell to consumers....
