I bought a nice alphabet set on etsy, mounted on wooden pegs.
I have trouble stamping the letters straight and keeping an even distance between each letter. Any advice?
I've tried placing the edges on a ruler but not all the letters have the same placement.
Perhaps someone can recommend a good alphabet set to use for art journaling?

That's one of the problems with using mounted stamps. Placement on the wooden block or peg can make it difficult to line up.
Most of my alphabet sets are unmounted and on EZ Mount, I trim them very close so I don't have this problem. And to line them up...I use border tape, which is kind of like masking tape, only not quite that sticky. Pulls off easily when you're done stamping.

Well that's kind of the beauty of stamping letters, it is not supposed to look perfect. Maybe its just a matter of needing a little more practice learning where the letters are going to land on the paper...
When I was big into alphabet stamps I would mount them in the bottom right corner of the mount so that I knew exactly where each letter was and could look from the side for placement. (I am a lefty, for a righty you probably want to mount them in the upper or lower left side of the block rather than the middle)
With the advent of unmounted stamps it makes things a little easier to see. Maybe you can unmount your peg stamps and put them on cling cushion?
When it comes to alphabets this is a case where clear stamps really have the advantage over rubber but I wouldn't avoid a rubber alphabet if I liked it. I never met a stamp I didn't like. If I like an image I'm going to buy it regardless of if it is clear, cling mounted, unmounted or wood mounted.
By the way purple onion designs has some awesome unmounted rubber alphabet stamps: www.purpleoniondesigns.com My absolute favorites are homegrown, hopscotch and skinny dip. I happen to lean towards really cute but if you like classy, vintage or elegant they've got those too.
Good luck with your alphabet!

I always just stamp the letters on angles so it looks like I meant to do it that way and btw, all our unmounted alphabets and sets are on sale now for 50 percent off... just use sets as your coupon code when you check out... through July 7th.

If you don't want to unmount then then consider placing marks with a Sharpie or something on the pegs that will help you line them up, like both left and right center so you can visually line up as you go. Wouldn't take much, just a small tick mark on each side and you could use a small ruler or piece of card stock to help line up the marks on each side of a stamp.
Another option: the stamp positioner, a pain for so much stamping but if you just have to have it perfect.......

Thanks,everybody.
All the suggestions were really,REALLY helpful. Great advice :)
I definetly need to practice using the stamps more and marking them with a sharpy is also an excellent idea. I know that I'd lose some if I unmounted them. They're quite small.
I don't want them perfect, just not too squinty and too unevenly spaced.
I find that the best stamps to do this is clear, too. I have a set but I refuse to buy another. I've used them very little and already some letters no longer stick to the acrylic block, which caused me to lose a letter. It's like looking for a needle in the a haystack trying to find one of those! I keep my acrylic block clean so they stick better.
I'll go and have a look the sets mentioned.
