View Full Version : Spray Starch technique

This is the easiest background technique you can do! All you need is black cardstock, spray starch (I used Niagra), Pearl Ex, foam paint brush and a tray to work on.

Put a piece of black cardstock on the tray and spray liberally with spray starch. Tap on Pearl Ex. Swirl the Pearl Ex around with the foam paint brush. Let dry. Use as a background, or stamp directly on background and emboss with a contrasting color.
- The spray starch acts as the adhesive and sets the Pearl Ex. No need to seal.
- The tulips and sentiment are stamped with Versamark and embossed with white embossing powder.

Thanks for coming by. If you try this technique, please share your art with us.

This was a past Christmas card featuring the spray starch technique. The sparkle from the Pearl Ex doesn't scan well, but I was very pleased with it. Definitely quick and easy!

Hi - I am new to stamping, what is Pearl EX? The technique looks cool and I would like to try. Thanks

Pearl Ex is a brand of mica powder. These baby powder fine pigments can be used with a variety of products (Versamark Watermark ink, Glue ink, starch, spray adhesive) to add sparkle to your stamping & other paper crafting projects as well as be added to white acrylic paint or other paint bases such as gum arabic, clear glazes & blending mediums for a different approach to adding glitz where you want it. Other brands are Primary Elements, Perfect Pearls, Moon Glow, Fashion Dust & Powdered Pearls. There is lots of info here & other places and there isn't really a wrong way to use these colorful powders, just be careful to not inhale them! :D

Glad to have you with us happygolucky2929!

Jenna has given some great information above!

Pearl Ex is made by Jacquard Products and you can find them at stamp stores or Hobby Lobby, Michaels etc. They are mica powders that have no adhesive in them, so if for instance, you painted them to your paper with a paint brush and water, when the water dried, the mica powder would brush away -- nothing in the product to adhere it to the cardstock. That is why you need to use some kind of adhesive when you apply Pear Ex to your paper (Jenna gave lots of ideas above). The spray starch in this technique acts as the adhesive.

There are other mica products that have the "adhesive" in the powder, such as Perfect Pearls (from Ranger) and because the adhesive is in the product, you can paint them on with water and when they dry they are set. Another very fun product!

BTW, you can use any of the mica powders in this technique, even if they have adhesive in them. I hope you will try the technique and share your art with us. This technique is super-easy and turns out very sparkly (which is very hard to capture on film!).

Here's a variation on the spray starch theme:

(Remember the shaving cream technique? Well, this is very similar, but I used spray starch instead of the shaving cream and Pearl Ex instead of reinkers or paint).

I sprayed spray starch on a tray, tapped on 2 different colors of Pearl Ex (Aztec Gold and Interference Gold), pressed black matte cardstock onto it, then lifted up. If some areas didn't turn out well, just press down again onto the Spray Starch/PE mixture. (To get the "movement", I pressed the cardstock down on the PE-Starch, as if trying to get rid of any air bubbles underneath. Continue pressing in various places until you see the PE-Starch come out the sides of your cardstock.) I hope this all makes sense.

If you try the technique, please post your art! We'd love to see it!

Yes, it is great on colored cardstock, OK on white (depending on the color of PE) but very dramatic on black.

Welcome to rsc, Minstrel!

Yes, this technique is so easy, and it turns out fantastic. If you need any extra Christmas or holiday cards, this is a perfect technique. I don't think it is photo-safe though, so I wouldn't put it in a scrapbook.

Those of us who have played with this background know that the scans can't do justice to the shimmer and appeal of the background. If you haven't tried it, it is SO simple and easy! After seeing Catherine's card, I want to get out my supplies and play some more. Too bad I have to go to work. LOL.

I bet gold would look good embossed.

i want to try this one this weekend...does it have to be embossed with white powder, or does anyother colors showup...

You may remember some discussion at the Dec. sketch challenges (sponsored by gg designs) -- something to the effect that "recipes are starting points" or maybe it was "recipes are points of departure". Anyway, I guess you can say it is the same with Tutorials. LOL.

Yes, you certainly can use other colors of embossing. You just want enough contrast so you can see your image. I agree with Catherine, gold might be perfect. Black would be good if the background is light.

BTW, over at ggdesigns, the artists were really playing with this technique and came up with some great variations. Go here to see:
http://www.ggdesigns.net/Gazette/

- Some used one color of PE (me, for instance), and some people used more colors of PE (like Catherine's above).

- Some people put the Spray Starch Technique on WHITE card cardstock (take a look at Yogi's and Jeanette's work), Deloris used dark green, Linda used brown.

- Some embossed on the background, some used it "as is" for a background and layered on top.

- Some used different types of brushes, or no brushes at all and tilted the cardstock so the colors moved on their own.

So, Inkkyjo, nothing is wrong. Have fun! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

What if I sprayed the starch into a small cup or container (to gather the liquid) and then added the pigment powder, would it then be like a paint?

I've seen the powders mixed with some liquid stuff (can't remember what it's called) and it's not very cheap (found in the painting section at Hobby Lobby). If the spray starch works, it's certainly an affordable alternative.

Deb Lovett
03-18-2010, 07:26 PM
Interesting idea. I don't think it will work because the spray starch dries too quickly. If you try it, let us know.

You can mix Pearl Ex with Future Floor Finish and paint it on your card.

wolfeyesone
03-19-2010, 05:43 AM
Craftyria- That's almost how I "put" the blue flowers on my sample sheet... I sprayed the starch into an small old tupperware cover & dipped my fan brush with it, then dipped the fan brush into some of the PE I had seperated from the jar.. You do need to work fast as Deb said it drys really quick, I do like the results you get, but I also learned 2 things, you get more caked up spots -(which I found hard to do anything with once dry.. Ie hard to flatten/smooth out)-as you can see in the sample- and you use alot of powder up. I found if you redip your brush w/ PE into more spray starch you can hurry & use it on another paper, but it does come out a bit different- smudgy.. but still useable !

wolfeyesone

Deb Lovett

where do you find future floor finish Deb ?

From what I understand by googling Future Floor Finish, it is now called "Pledge Floor Finish with Future Shine".
Some stores may still have the old product. Here is a picture of it:
http://whatsinproducts.com/information.php?brandNo=19-001-212&PHPSESSID=5259

Obviously I don't wax my floors very often, and now I certainly won't use this product. It (like Spray Starch) is a stamping supply.

Craftyria, I just had a thought. Over at gg designs where we are experimenting with Spray Starch, someone used LIQUID starch (cool effect). I wonder if you can make a Pearl Ex paint using liquid starch? If you try it, let us know.

Here are couple more examples of a variation of the Spray Starch Technique. I was playing in the kitchen and my paint brushes were upstairs, so "never mind brushes, I'll just use my fingers." That works too.

Top: I did the technique on white regular cardstock and swirled the Pearl Ex around with my fingers. The shimmer isn't dynamic on white.

Bottom: Again I used my fingers to swirl the Pearl Ex and then tapped all over with my fingers. Black really shows off the shimmer.

Shelly

There was an old technique that involved dipping string in paint and putting i between two cards. Then you drag the string out. So I'm thinking that if you spray starch on two cards and add your PE you could do this with a dry string or a string dipped in just starch and get two decorated pieces.

Me too, I wanna see. Maybe the string could even just be wet with water. I think a dry string would absorb too much of the starch.

Thought I should share a few of the cards I made recently with the spray starch technique. The first one uses a g.g. designs calla lily mini floral & is stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black on top of the spray starched card stock. The next is a Victorine Originals butterfly stamped with the same ink on another piece of the spray starch technique card stock. I tried different styles on the paper. I balled up plastic wrap & patted it all over to spread the different colors of PE. I also dropped the PE on with a straw, but ended up doing it again over top of the same piece with the plastic wrap because it didn't cover as well. I did others with a toothbrush that I swirled in the PE to make patterns. Thanks again Deb for introducing us to another awesome technique! :applause:

Does your homeschool curiculum include art? Maybe you could use this for an experimental art project?

I remember those days -- I homeschooled my kids too. Before you know it, these days will be over. Our daughters have both graduated from college now.

Maybe you will be able to "play" with us over the summer???

Fab has a great idea -- some of these techniques would be fun art projects. Your kids may get into making ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) and trading them too.

Here is another variation on the Spray Starch Technique. It is a combination of Spray Starch and the Plastic Wrap Technique.

For more information on the Plastic Wrap Technique, go here: http://www.rubberstampchat.net/showthread.php?t=3360

Prepare your cardstock as in Post 1 (place cardstock on protected surface, liberally spray with Spray Starch; tap on Pearl Ex and blend). Use a piece of plastic wrap that is larger than your cardstock. Place the plastic wrap on the Spray Starch-Pearl Ex cardstock and press the wrinkles down onto the wet cardstock. Let dry (test a corner by carefully lifting the plastic wrap to see if the cardstock shows the design from the wrinkles).

Left: sample created on black matte cardstock.
Right: sample created on black glossy cardstock. (Because glossy cardstock is not absorbent, this sample took days to dry. After 2 days, I carefully removed the plastic wrap and discovered the spray starch still wasn't dry! I let it continue to dry with the plastic wrap removed. It finally is dry.

Deb, saw your "cat" card using the spray starch technique in a recent issue of JUST CARDS (I think). It was nice to see another example, esp. one that used a cat!

I used this technique w/ white cs. Once it was dry I cut it out in a scalloped circle and then used a cuttlebug embossing folder.

Great tutorial. I've only done this using reinkers but I think the Pearl Ex will look even better. It's very addicting once you start so have alot of glossy paper handy.

I have never tried Spray Starch and reinkers. What a great idea, LorraineB. We'd love to see a sample. Do you have any available?

I would guess that you have to apply the reinker in a different way than the PearlEx powders.

You use the reinkers the same way this tutorial uses the alcohol inks. Alcohol inks also create great backgrounds. I was looking for the tutorial for the reinkers and spray starch but couldn't find it.

Don't limit yourself to ONLY black cardstock.
This started out as red cardstock. I like the gold swirls and don't want to cover them up, so I'm keeping this ATC simple.
