I am very new to working with Prismacolor pencils. I was working on a project and made a coloring mistake when I got distracted. I can cover the mistake w/ an embellishment (like a flower), but I was wondering if there are any techniques for erasing a mistake with these pencils?

I don't want to just try to erase it at this point as I don't want to make a bigger mess than it is.

Suggestions from you seasoned Prismacolor users welcome!

If you have an art eraser made for color pencils, or chalks that may work. Just try it on a small area,if it doesn't work you will know then can use an embellishment. More useres may know better than me. Hope you can fix it, I know how frustrating it can be to do all the work and then have something go wrong.

Ahhh, the infamous Oops muse has struck again, darn her....:D

A good eraser like the Prismacolor one or the Pentel plastic ones may get most of it up. Then just color over it and blend, blend, blend. I always use several color anyway so maybe it will look more like a shadow area or something once done.

Terry Medaris (www.terrymedarisartstamps.net) taught us in one of his coloring classes when we make an oops, to use those white pentel clickable erasers and a metal drafting erasing template (with all those lovely odd shaped holes) to mask all but the oops spot. Then to clean off the eraser on a scrap of paper between each erasing session so you don't carry one color to the next oops spot to the next. HTH ~C8>

I use my clicker eraser or most of the time grab my Stampin Up eraser to fix mistakes.

I do find with Prismacolors that if I don't erase it right away with an art eraser it won't come up so mine usually become embellishment opportunities unless I can make them a shadow. . .or I make the mistake what I 'really' wanted in the first place. Only you know that it's an oops, correct?

As I'm coloring with layers of prismacolor I can often get down to 'close enough' to the first layer and then relayer my other colors on top.

It is reallly difficult to erase Prismacolors completely, especially dark colors and red. But, like Karen says, you can often remove enough of the color so that you can work over it. The trick is to lift the color. If you use an eraser and rub at it, many times you are actually rubbing the pigment into the paper. The best thing I've found to remove color is Poster Putty, also know as Blue Tack. Just take a small piece, press it down onto the area you want to remove, and then pull straight up. You'll probably have to do this quite a few times, but you should be able to remove most of the color.

Here's a link in case you're not sure what Poster Putty is: http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Adhesive-Putty-860-Removable/dp/B000AN7EW4/ref=pd_sim_dbs_k_2. There are several different brands (and colors) out there, and they all seem to work.

A kneaded rubber eraser can be used the same way, but it won't remove as much of the color.

The kneaded rubber will work best if you knead it until it get warm and soft. The putty gets a bit too soft and sticky if you knead it first.

:)

Oh, and I should add...if you've used a solvent like Gamsol, this probably won't work.

Good tip Donna. Tape works too. I use blue painter's tape.

Do you use Gamsol when coloring?

One of the things I LOVE about using Gamsol is if I accidentally color outside the lines, it's usually easy to fix. Just keep blending and that will lift quite a bit of the color. If you're not using Gamsol, a Prismacolor Blender pencil is a must. You can often lift quite a bit of color with those too.
